A Resident Life Mentor (Advisor’s) Perspective on Supporting Students Where It Matters Most

Empowering Resident Life Mentors to Support Student Wellbeing
At EMEA Connect 2026, our annual customer conference bringing together higher education professionals from across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, one message rose above the rest: Student wellbeing is no longer a superficial buzzword or a “nice to have.” For higher education institutions globally, student wellness has become a fundamental priority central to the student experience and essential to student success.
StarRez recently sat down with Charlotte Walker, a Resident Life Mentor (Advisor) at the University of Sheffield, to gain her perspective on what prioritising student wellness looks like and how StarRez enables Resident Life Mentor’s to deliver meaningful day-to-day support to students.
About to start her third year in residence life, Charlotte sits on the frontline, supporting peers through everything from everyday challenges to more complex personal situations.
The Reality Behind the Student Experience
University life is often portrayed as exciting and transformative, but for many students it can also be overwhelming. Once the initial excitement fades and the transition into university living sets in, students need support more than ever to navigate living in shared spaces, forming friendships, feeling isolated, and battling mental health challenges.
For some students, deeper challenges also emerge around belonging and wellbeing, especially when expectations don’t match reality.
There is so much pressure on Students, and it’s unrealistic as well when trying to meet those peer pressures. I get a lot of Students coming up to me about several different mental health concerns, and if they have been bounced between mental health services, it can make them reluctant to reach out.”

The Critical Role of Resident Life Mentors
Resident Life Mentors like Charlotte play a vital role in bridging the gap between students and formal support services. Many Students have reported that they struggle with mental health services that are cumbersome or have long wait times. Resident Life Mentors provide immediate human support in a system where professional services are often stretched. However, to do this effectively, Resident Life Mentors need more than empathy; they need the right tools.
“At the University of Sheffield, we offer a lot of support. There is Residence Life, who are a bridge between people who are struggling and really need support but can't quite get there yet due to a waiting list. We are always in the student areas, so we offer a constant form of communication to our students, which is so important.“

How StarRez Turns Information into Insight
StarRez, a global leader in student housing and resident experience software, enables Resident Life Mentors like Charlotte to deliver more personalised and meaningful support by providing easy access to key student information. This allows Resident Life Mentors to tailor their approach to individual needs, making interactions more empathetic, informed, and human.
“StarRez is great because everything is in one place. You can access all your students’ information quickly and easily. Just search their name to see key details like age, preferred pronouns, and any important notes that help you take a more thoughtful, sensitive approach when needed. It also shows the activities they’ve participated in, which makes for really natural and meaningful conversation starter.”

With insight into student interests and activity, Resident Life Mentors can quickly build rapport by tailoring their conversations to each individual. This allows them to reduce awkward or impersonal check-ins and encourage students to open up sooner, ultimately strengthening trust and helping students feel recognised as individuals rather than just residents.
In more complex situations, Resident Life Mentors have comprehensive, real-time information about a student and can assess situations more effectively from the outset and determine earlier on what additional support would be required and make informed decisions.
It also ensures continuity of care by allowing staff to log interactions and share updates, creating a holistic view of student wellbeing and enabling seamless handovers without students needing to repeat their stories. Behind the scenes, StarRez connects teams and streamlines processes, reducing administrative burden and allowing frontline staff to focus on what matters most, supporting students.
Supporting the Frontline Staff Who Support Students
Charlotte’s experience demonstrates that student wellbeing is not just about services; it’s about equipping the people who deliver those services. Charlotte is able to draw on her own experience as well.
"I think sometimes what helps other students open up is that you're relatable and you just provide that level of guidance. I have first years coming up to me asking the same questions I had in my first year. So, I think it kind of just gives them that reassurance that you will be okay.”
-Charlotte Walker, Resident Life Mentor, University of Sheffield
In roles like Charlotte’s, where every interaction has the potential to make a difference, having the right system in place is transformative. They can also add value by:
- Enhancing personalisation at scale
- Improving coordination across teams
- Supporting better outcomes for students
